Donald Trump Unveils New Afghanistan Plan to Nation | Watch Video

President Donald Trump plans to outline his strategy for the 16-years-old war in Afghanistan during a nationally televised address Monday night. 

The remarks from Fort Myer, Virginia, come at a particularly challenging time for the president, as he faces lingering bipartisan backlash following his responsive to violence at a white supremacist rally in Virginia earlier this month.


The U.S. may decide to send nearly 4,000 more troops to Afghanistan to train and advise Afghan forces in the ongoing counter terrorism fight against the Taliban and a affiliate of the Islamic State group, according to The Associated Press. Trump said he and his advisers decided the way forward on Afghanistan at the Camp David presidential retreat Friday, following what was a reportedly long series of deliberations.


Trump's decision on whether to ramp up engagement in the conflict is a crucial one. He won the White House in the part on a policy of reducing engagement in foreign conflicts. President Barrack Obama pledged to end the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, but they were still ongoing when he left office, despite an overall draw down in troops.
